Teaching guitar has played an important role in my life for a long time... maybe that's an understatement; the lovely lady in the photo above agreed to take my hand in marriage after  free guitar lessons became part of the deal (ask her if you think I'm kidding).

I taught my first guitar class at the local Y while I was still a high school student, and have now had the privilege of instructing hundreds of guitar students through the years. Whether my job has taken me to middle school, high school, or university campuses--I've never failed to be amazed by how powerfully music impacts our lives--sometimes lifting our spirits, or strengthening our resolve--at other times providing a safe place where healing happens. An impressive body of research now tells us that music can even improve cognitive functioning and reduce stress (see "10 Ways Musical Training Boosts Brain Power," Psychology Today).
